Dodd's father was a Civil War veteran, and Dodd adored his father for raising them well in place of their deceased mother. Although Dodd had already passed away, June was her father's birth month. Through her efforts, Father's Day was officially celebrated for the first time on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington.

Father's Day has since spread across the United States and then to other countries around the world, where it has become recognized as a day to honor and thank fathers and father-figures.

Father's Day is a relatively new holiday in Japan. Unlike Mother's Day, it was celebrated relatively late in Japan, in 1966.
