Mahi Mahi

The Mahi-mahi is a large carnivorous fish found in warm seas and is popular in sport fishing. In Hawaii, it is also called Mahi-mahi and is consumed as a high-end fish. Mahi-mahi leather is characterized by its very fine scale pattern and distinct lateral line, providing a very smooth texture. Historically, in Kochi, the Mahi-mahi was used as a betrothal gift because the male and female swim closely together, which is why it is said to symbolize marital harmony and romantic success.

All fish have a sensory organ called the "lateral line" that allows them to sense water currents, and this is a precious part that can only be obtained once per leather piece. Like the yellowtail, the Mahi-mahi is a fish with a clear lateral line, making it one of the leathers where the charm of fish leather can be most appreciated.
