Dolphin fish are migratory fish that belong to the Perciformes order and are found in tropical and temperate waters. They are a beautiful species of fish that have a gradation of blue and green when swimming and change color to golden when caught. Their bodies are flat and taper from the head to the tail, and the forehead of males becomes bulging and angular as they grow. In Hawaii, they are known as a high-class fish under the name mahi-mahi, and are a familiar fish that is often caught in Kochi. Some people may have heard the name "mahi-mahi" more than "dolphin fish."
The name "Shiira" seems to have been derived from " Shiina, " a shriveled rice grain that does not produce good rice or other crops, due to the fish's tough skin and slender body.
Dolphins also have a habit of gathering around driftwood. Sometimes this is an animal carcass, so it's said that the name comes from the word " death " or " corpse fish ." It's a bit creepy, isn't it?
However, mahi-mahi is actually said to be a fish that has a good relationship with its husband and wife!!
Male dolphins have prominent foreheads, while females have rounded foreheads, and they swim in pairs. When a male is caught, the female swims behind the fishing boat, and sometimes the female is caught shortly after. For this reason, it has long been a betrothal gift in Kochi.
